⚠️ Your property could be at risk
As of January 1, 2022, Queensland law mandates interconnected smoke alarms in all residential properties being renovated, sold or rented out. By 2027, every home must be fully compliant.
What's changed with smoke alarm laws in Queensland?
Queensland has new rules about smoke alarms to increase early warnings of a fire. These rules started in 2017 and will apply to all homes by 2027.
The due dates for installing compliant smoke alarms:
If you're building a new home or doing substantial renovations: Since January 1, 2017
If you're selling or renting out your home: Since January 1, 2022
For all other homes: By January 1, 2027
These rules are important because they help keep you and your family safer from fires. 🔥 Complying with these rules is also important for your home insurance.

Smoke Alarm Hot Tips
Smoke alarms save lives
Test your smoke alarms regularly
Set a reminder in your calendar to test your smoke alarms throughout the year pressing the "test" button. If the alarm doesn't sound, replace the battery or the entire smoke alarm.
Keep your smoke alarms clean
Dust and debris can interfere with a smoke alarm's ability to detect smoke, or an even bigger issue can be false alarms. In Queensland, insects love to nest inside smoke alarms which cause false alarms. If you’re waking up in the middle of the night to no fire, call our team the next morning. A small amount of surface spray around the perimeter of the alarm should deter insect ingress.
Replace every 10 years
Smoke alarms have a limited lifespan of 10 years, so it's important to replace them regularly. Check the manufacturer's instructions to see how often you should replace your model.
